Directionals at a DISTANCE: OUT
Taught by Dr. Lisa Schmit
Goal of this class is to help handlers and dogs understand, refine, and master the "Out" cue, focusing on lateral movement away from the handler, building accuracy, distance, and confidence.
This course will help you establish a clear, consistent "Out" cue that will enable your dog to navigate agility courses with confidence and distance. Through step-by-step lessons, you will develop a deeper understanding of how to teach your dog to move laterally away from you, how to reward your dog and to perform directional moves with precision. Whether you have a young puppy or an experienced dog, this class will provide valuable insights into refining your agility handling skills and strengthening your communication with your dog.
By the end of this class, you’ll have a better understanding of how to teach and reward your dog the “Out” cue, how to apply it to agility courses, and how to troubleshoot and refine it for maximum success!
This class will address common challenges, and you'll see multiple dogs of different skill levels being trained step-by-step, from a puppy learning the foundations to expert-level dogs working at greater distances.
The class will address common challenges, and Stars of the Class:
- Myelin (Puppy, 5-6 months) – Showing how she tackles foundational exercises and modifications.
- Key & Emulate (Intermediate Dogs) – Working on adding more distance and precision with the "Out" cue.
- Inspire & Revolution (Expert Dogs) – Pushing the limits of distance, refining the "Out" cue managing advanced levels of complexity.
Why Take This Class?

Directionals at Distance: You’ll learn how to teach your dog to move laterally away from you without misdirected turns, spins, or barking. This is essential for clear communication in agility.
Step-by-Step Training: Through the progression of exercises shown with different dogs at different levels, you will be able to take the concepts from foundational work all the way through to expert-level handling.
