One of the most important elements of distance training is for your dog to understand your cues. There are many fun exercises to do in a small space with targets and cones to teach your dog your cues, directionals, and add distance! This webinar is designed to give you the foundation level information you need to start your distance journey.
My goal for this webinar is to teach my favorite groundwork and foundation exercises. We will be doing groundwork to help you solidify your cues and add distance.
What you will learn
I kicked off this journey because I know how tricky it can be to make the most out of limited training space, and I wanted to give you some exercises that will help teach distance even in a small area. Each lesson is meticulously pieced together with clear, actionable steps, making organization approachable and design concepts less daunting. I've poured years of experience into this, ensuring you come away with not only the know-how but the confidence to apply these space-maximizing sequences to teach distance. Whether you are new to distance or an advanced handler, I'm excited to guide you through this tailor-made learning experience.
The first step in distance training is to have a clear, consistent cueing system! The farther away from your dog you are, the clearer you have to be with your cues and handling. In this webinar, we will be going over what your cues are and how to be consistent with your cues! We will use toys, targets and cones to work the groundwork exercises that will teach your dog to follow your body language, learn your verbal cues and understand motion. We will go over how to teach directional cues- here, switch, out and in. These groundwork exercises help you and your dog become comfortable with distance and learning to drive away from you with confidence.
As a distance trainer, I focus on developing, refining, and rewarding my dogs for understanding my cues, obstacle performance and handling moves all a distance. I believe groundwork and foundation skills are the building blocks to success. Most of my training sessions are short fun sequences so I can train various handling options, move myself to different locations, push for distance and reward often. The core of my training philosophy is based on solid foundation skills and consistent handling/cueing to motivate my dogs in a fun and positive way. I break skills down into small increments so I can reward often, solidify my cues, teach the dog to understand my cues and add distance. I start off targeting my dog, then lure them and then reward them for the correct sequence. I take the responsibility to maintain my cues in a clear, crisp, calm and confident manner for my dogs. This gives my dogs confidence that they can trust my cues which builds our relationships, speed, drive and distance.
